Music Library
The creation of a new music library, located in what was previously the children’s library.
The Central Library had been in need of a dedicated music library since the loss of the original music department several years earlier due to the reorganisation of the rest of the library building. Until the creation of the new music library the music stock had limited borrowed shelf space in the general lending library, which was a far from ideal situation.
The award from The James Reckitt Library Trust funded the creation of a new music library, located in what was previously the children’s library. The space was opened up and a mezzanine floor added, creating a modern, airy feel and highlighted many of the building’s original features.
The new home for music has been designed around all the different ways that library users may wish to relate to music and the stock has been updated.
The music library has always been a place for both music lovers and musicians, but this new facility has taken this principle to a new level. Every computer has industry-standard composition and recording software to suit every taste, from classical to electronic: and there are four booths that can be used by musicians needing a little more space or privacy. Each computer also has a music keyboard. In addition, there are two electric pianos for customers to use.
The space has been designed to facilitate performance too, with mobile shelving and programmable lighting. The aim is to make this a place where music lovers can find and discover music, and musicians and music students can create and perform music whatever their personal resources.
