I Remember

An exhibition combining portrait photography and recordings of poems.

I Remember was an exhibition combining portrait photography and recordings of poems, written and read aloud by local women and girls.

The poetry covered the subject of war, memory of war and the consequences of war; conflict and love, loss and joy.

Included in the collection were poems by the local literary figures Winifred Holtby and Stevie Smith. They stood alongside the poetry and portraits of local women, who shared the memories and impact of war across living memory, from the second world word to far more recent conflicts.

The poems are in some of the many languages that are now to be heard in Hull, English, our local dialect, Arabic, Sierra Leonean, Swahili and Oromo (Ethiopia).

The exhibition took place in the library art space “The Space” throughout November 2014, and received 389 visitors, not including those who visited “The Space” for other reasons e.g. seminars, meetings etc.
