Beyond Words

Connecting the highest quality art with communities through the library service.

The Beyond Words project began in September 2016 when an open call was released for artists to take part in an 18-month commissioning project by Freedom Festival Arts Trust.

Curated by London-based publishers Book Works and supported by the James Reckitt Library Trust and Hull Culture and Leisure, the ten books explore the theme of freedom, cultural history, identity, historical referencing, migration and the impact on individuals and society as a whole.

Each book communicated the artist’s response to ideas and issues around freedom and were exhibited over three separate events in Hull Central Library and WISE.

The collection includes work by:

  • Between the Borders, Between the Borders episode #4 – The freedom deficit
  • Libita Clayton, FORGET THAT GUY (message from a freedom fighter)
  • Theresa Easton, Freedom to have a Home
  • Jacob V Joyce, QTIPOC Super Powers, Volume 1
  • Rudy Loewe, Moving Through Borders
  • Nick Norton, AKA: A genealogy of the saddle
  • Hannah Dawn Henderson, Being, in a State of Erasure
  • Helen Cammock, Moveable Bridge
  • Lubaina Himid, Freedom Kangas
  • Ruth Ewan, Twenty-nine Thousand Nights – A communist Life by Nan Berger

The full Beyond Words collection is exclusively available in the reference sections of all of Hull’s libraries.
